A study by E. Glenn Schellenberg at the University of Toronto found an increase in the IQ of children who were given weekly piano and vocal lessons. Schellenberg gave 36 weeks of vocal and piano lessons to 12 six-year-olds. These 12 children over the school year tested on average three IQ points higher than the other groups.

I had a customer call me today and ask if we can teach her son who has Cerebral Palsy how to play the drums. She said that the left side of his body is weak and his right side is fine. This of course made me think. Most of us have a dominant side and a weaker side of our bodies. I hear it all the time. People will say "well I can do anything on the keys with my right hand, but my left hand...nothing" or "my picking hand is really strong but my fretting hand is weak". Of course, his weakness will be more pronounced, but this is what we do every day. So, I said to her "just like with everyone else, we will work with his strengths and strengthen his weakness. That is what music lessons are all about.
